Cataract surgery: Does it hurt?

Among the most common questions ophthalmologists get from patients facing cataract surgery is if the procedure is painful.

Cataract surgery is rarely painful and most patients who have gone through the procedure say they only had slight discomfort. After surgery, most patients are relieved how fast and relatively pain-free the procedure is.

Patients need to be awake during cataract surgery so are offered a sedative before the procedure to keep them relaxed while in the operating room. Before surgery patients are also given anesthetic eyedrops to numb the eye. These drops keep the patient from feeling much, if any, pain during surgery. In surgery, patients feel only minimal discomfort; most patients describe it as pressure on the eye.

In addition to pain, patients also fear that they will be able to “see” the surgery through the operative eye. Though patients will see colors and bright lights, they will not be able to see the surgeon’s instruments or the work performed.

It is important to note that Tower Clock Eye Center offers an IV-free cataract surgery option for those who feel unease about an IV needle. Our surgeons and nurse anesthetists monitor your pain levels throughout surgery and are by your immediate side to make you feel comfortable, and to minimize or eliminate any pain you may experience.
