Dr. Matthew Thompson traveled to Haiti for his third mission trip with The Friends of Haiti Organization. While there, he and Dr. Amit Tandon screened over 300 patients for eye disease. Each patient received comprehensive eye care, and some even received glasses to improve their vision. There was a total of 61 surgeries performed (55 cataract, 2 corneal transplants and four pterygium surgeries).
During Dr. Matthew Thompson’s youngest patient was 5 years of age. His vision had declined from normal to hand motions in both eyes from dense white cataracts at the age of 4 years. One day after surgery he was 20/40 uncorrected. By the next day he was following us around the eye clinic and playing games with the other kids like a normal kid again. Dr. Amit Tandon, who has performed over 10,000 cataract surgeries, told Dr. Thompson that performing this child’s surgery was “the best experience of his entire career.” Below is a video of this young boy one day after surgery seeing again!
