Eyelid Reconstruction

A new bump, growth, cyst or unusual spot on your eyelid may be harmless, but some eyelid lesions can be cancerous or otherwise require treatment. We typically start by removing the lesion and sending it to the pathologist to obtain a formal diagnosis. 

For larger or more invasive lesions, treatment may involve coordination with other specialists, such as Mohs Surgeons. The surgical plan is based on the diagnosis and the location and extent of the lesion.

At Tower Clock Eye Center, eyelid lesions can be evaluated and treated with specialized care focused on both the health of your eye and the appearance and function of your eyelid. When surgical removal is necessary, reconstruction may also be performed to restore the eyelid as naturally as possible.

An eyelid lesion is a growth, bump, spot or other abnormal area involving the eyelid. Eyelid lesions can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Common benign eyelid lesions include:

• Cysts
• Skin tags and papillomas
• Moles or nevi
• Styes
• Chalazia
• Other growths of the eyelid skin

Common eyelid cancers include: 

• Basal cell carcinoma
• Squamous cell carcinoma
• Less common but more serious cancers can also occur

Because it is not always possible to determine what an eyelid lesion is simply by looking at it, an examination by an eye specialist is important when a lesion is new, changing or concerning. A biopsy may be recommended when the diagnosis is uncertain or cancer is suspected.
