Entropion and Ectropion Repair

Entropion and Ectropion Repair

Entropion and ectropion are types of eyelid malposition. Both conditions can affect the way your eyelid protects the surface of your eye.

Entropion

Entropion occurs when the edge of the eyelid turns inward toward the eye, causing the eyelashes to rub the eye.  This may cause:

  • Eye irritation or a feeling that something is in your eye
  • Redness
  • Excessive tearing
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Blurred vision
  • Corneal irritation or injury

Although lubricating drops and other treatments may temporarily relieve symptoms, persistent entropion may require surgical repair to restore the eyelid to a more natural position.

Ectropion

Ectropion occurs when the eyelid turns outward, away from the eye. Symptoms can include:

  • Dry, irritated eyes
  • Excessive tearing
  • Redness
  • Burning or a gritty sensation
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty completely closing the eye
  • Exposure of the inner eyelid

Ectropion can also cause the tear drainage system to function improperly, which can contribute to persistent watery eyes.

What Causes Entropion and Ectropion?

Eyelid malposition can develop for several reasons, including:

  • Age-related changes to the eyelid
  • Previous surgery, injury, or trauma
  • Scar tissue
  • Skin conditions
  • Muscle weakness or paralysis

Determining the underlying cause is an important part of treatment. The appropriate repair depends on the anatomy and severity of the eyelid problem.

When Is Entropion or Ectropion Repair Needed?

Eyelid repair may be recommended when:

  • Symptoms are persistent or worsening
  • Eyelashes are repeatedly rubbing against the eye
  • The eye is becoming excessively dry or irritated
  • The eyelid is not adequately protecting the eye
  • The cornea is becoming irritated or damaged
  • Conservative treatment is no longer providing adequate relief
  • The eyelid position is significantly affecting daily comfort or function

What Can I Expect During Recovery?

Entropion and ectropion repair is typically performed as an outpatient procedure. The exact anesthesia and surgical approach depend on the procedure being performed and your individual needs.

After surgery, temporary swelling, bruising, tightness, eyelid malposition, or mild discomfort around the eyelid and eye can be expected. Your surgical team will provide specific instructions regarding medications, eye care, activity and follow-up.

Most patients gradually return to normal activities as healing progresses. Your surgeon will let you know when it is appropriate to resume specific activities.

If you are experiencing signs or symptoms of entropion or ectropion, contact Tower Clock Eye Center to schedule an evaluation.
